What kinds of painting techniques are used in the  Chinosierie pieces?

Crackling effect is used frequently in the production of individual pieces of chinoiserie, crackling is produced by the application of glaze and the mixing of a medium of colours. After crackling a primary coat of paint is applied to the piece. It is then ready for hand decoration by skilled artisans with metal colours and water colour paint. Depending on the piece eg, large red bird treasure box, it takes one artisan two days to complete the painting. After the hand decoration is complete the piece undergoes an antiquing process with a special glaze to give the peice a distressed look and the process is completed by waxing.

How long does it take to make each Chinoiserie piece?

A team of master artisans are involved in making every piece. In making each piece a blacksmith, carpenter and painter work in partnership to produce the end product. The process usually takes several days as all the work is done by hand and the work has to be follow various stages.

Is the Chinoiserie paint work water resistant ?

Yes. Each piece is protected and sealed by a layer of laquer both to protect the surface paint work and the inside of planters and waste paper baskets. Our garden / conservatory furniture may be used outdoors and is resistant to spillages and occasional rain, however it is not suitable for a complete out door life.

Are there any special after care instructions for the Chinoiserie pieces?

In general each piece will keep its beautiful look for a long time and occasional waxing with a small amount of clear wax will preserve the paint work.
